The New Zealand entomologist George Hudson first proposed modern DST. Hudson's shift-work job gave him leisure time to collect insects and led him to value after-hours daylight. In 1895 he presented a paper to the Wellington Philosophical Society proposing a two-hour daylight-saving shift, and after considerable interest was expressed in Christchurch, he followed up with an 1898 paper.
Daylight Savings Time is generally not observed near the equator, where sunrise times do not vary enough to justify it. Only a minority of the world's population, 21%, uses DST, because Asia and Africa generally do not observe it.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS: Turn back clocks — and practice fire safety. Many fire departments have used this day (that we set the clocks BACK) as a reminder to check your batteries in your smoke alarm
Reasons that smoke alarms did not operate: In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, almost half (46%) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries. Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms. 7
It’s probably not saving any energy
The National Research Council of Canada did a comprehensive review of the scientific literature in 2008 to find out if daylight saving time really was saving energy for Canadians. Their conclusion was that we don’t really know.
It may be the one thing where Saskatchewan is right
With daylight saving time, it is the one issue in which we are forced to bow our heads to the wisdom of the Wheat Province.
