Do not hesitate to contact us for any assistance or advice on our products and services.

Oxygen therapy lets you manage your symptoms and breathe more easily so you can enjoy your everyday activities.

Living with home oxygen therapy is an integral part of your respiratory treatment, and should help you enjoy a better quality of life on a day-to-day basis.

Feeling confident with your oxygen therapy

Oxygen therapy might take time to get used to - but you are not alone. Thousands of Canadians use oxygen therapy to breathe more easily, live longer, and make the most of each day.

Remember the benefits

  • Oxygen therapy can improve the quality and length of your life by getting more oxygen into your blood.
  • It helps you feel more focused and energized.
  • It helps provide the energy for everyday things like hobbies, spending time with family, and being active.

Each day, you can use oxygen therapy to:

  • Do everyday things like make your bed, dress up, clean, climb stairs, take a shower, shop, and have an intimate moment.
  • Do what you love to do - travel, spend time with your family, or pursue a hobby.
  • Re energize while you rest, to enjoy the therapy’s full benefits
  • Feel better during periods of your worst symptoms of breathlessness
  • Exercise (with the support of your doctor), or go out.

If you’re feeling anxious about your oxygen therapy

Adopt habits like sitting down to take a shower, choosing clothes that are easy to put on, splitting your meals, and eating slowly.

Seek support from people you are close with, or ask your doctor or other healthcare provider about a support program near you. Be open about how you feel to lessen your anxiety about using oxygen therapy at home and in public.

Using oxygen therapy at home

  • It is imperative to your safety that you quit smoking when you start using oxygen at home; ask your doctor for help if needed
  • Follow your medical treatment as prescribed, including home oxygen therapy and medications
  • Ask your doctor about getting vaccinated against the flu
  • Avoid strong fumes and scents that trigger cough

Living with symptoms

Track your symptoms every day. Note what makes them go away and what triggers them.

Ask your doctor questions

Write down any questions you have for your doctor or other primary healthcare professional and ask them on your next visit.

Be Active

Meet up with a friend, spend time with your family,  take a walk outside, or do something you love.

Keep healthy

Eat a balanced diet and drink enough water.

Make your environment pleasant & clean

Ensure you have a smoke-free surrounding. Arrange for help if you need it for larger chores, and remove potential allergens like pets and dust from your surroundings.

Have an emergency plan

Keep portable oxygen (either a portable oxygen tank or a portable oxygen concentrator) handy in case you need it, for example when your electricity malfunctions.

Living with COPD at home

You can live a long, fulfilled life with COPD.

Tracking your COPD symptoms will help you stabilize them and improve how you feel overall. It is possible to live with COPD for many years by being active, eating healthy, and thinking positively.

Know the triggers that cause your COPD flare-ups and avoid them.

By managing your COPD, you will be prepared for when you need to seek help. Stay indoors on very cold or hot days, avoid smoke or strong perfumes, and use gentle cleaning products at home.

It is also important to:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Stay away from people with colds and flu
  • Eat well, stay active, and get enough sleep
  • Keep track of your daily symptoms so you can recognise them quickly

Join a patient support group

You may find it helpful to join a support group to meet other people who are also using oxygen therapy. Sharing stories and tips can be enjoyable and beneficial. Ask your healthcare provider to help you find a local group or visit www.lung.ca
