Traveling with Oxygen

VitalAire can help with your oxygen transport needs. Plan ahead and follow these simple recommendations for traveling to places you want.

Planning is the key

Plan at least six to eight weeks in advance to travel successfully. Your plan should include contacting your doctor, travel provider, accommodation, VitalAire or any other parties involved in your trip.

1

Doctor

Talk to your doctor

Discuss your travel plans with your doctor. Because reducing air pressure on an aircraft affects blood oxygen levels, you may need to change your medication if you are flying. You may also need additional oxygen.

Ask your doctor for a letter listing your medications and oxygen therapy prescription. This will help if you lose your luggage or need medical care.

2

Travel Provider

Whether you travel by car, bus, train, ship or plane, each mode of transport may require a different approach to your oxygen therapy. For example, you will need to request special assistance from your airline.

Each travel provider will have rules for the type of oxygen equipment you can use. Regulations may vary, but it will take time to fill out the paperwork to make your trip possible, so notify everyone ahead of time to avoid unnecessary problems.

Plan your trip

Your pre-travel planning checklist

This checklist will help you plan your trip. Begin the process at least eight weeks before the trip to allow time for all preparations to be made:

Let VitalAire know you will be travelling

We can provide you oxygen therapy support for your travel to most popular destinations so that your hotel or other accommodation is prepared for your arrival.

For optimal support, we require a minimum of two weeks’ notice for domestic travel and four weeks for overseas travel. Ideally, try to plan it so you arrive at your destination on a weekday, when support is more readily available.

Use this handy checklist to help you plan your travel. Starting the process at least eight weeks before your trip will allow plenty of time for all the arrangements to be made.
