How to clean a CPAP machine?

The best way to clean CPAP machines, masks, hoses, and accessories is by following a few caring tips. These are simple and effective for getting the most use out of your equipment.

How do you clean a CPAP machine?

Each manufacturer has specific cleaning instructions for their CPAP machines, masks and accessories – particularly the cushion between the mask and the face, which can be quite fragile.

However, these basic guidelines on how to clean a CPAP machine are typical to all devices:

  • Wipe all the external surfaces with a damp cloth
  • The humidifier and hose, where fitted, should be cleaned thoroughly each week with mild soap and water
  • Any washable air filters should be cleaned and dried weekly and disposable filters replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions
  • The CPAP mask should be disassembled and cleaned each week, being gentle with the cushion
  • Mask cushions should be cleaned every day with a mask wipe such as the SleepEssentials by VitalAire CPAP mask wipe
  • The headgear – the straps that hold your mask on – should be cleaned each week, or as needed
  • Ensure that the CPAP machine, filters, air hose, mask and accessories are dry before using them again
