Getting started with
sleep apnea treatment

Do not hesitate to contact us for any assistance or advice on our products and services.

We offer different types of devices including CPAP machines to help you treat your sleep apnea. We will also support you to ensure you find the best and most effective fit.

What is CPAP?

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy is the gold standard in treating obstructive sleep apnea,1 the most common type of sleep apnea.

CPAP machines treat mild to severe obstructive sleep apnea. They have a generator that pumps the required flow of air through a mask you wear while sleeping, to create a light pressure in your throat that keeps your airway open.

A CPAP machine used properly can eliminate loud snoring and drastically improve your and your partner’s sleep. Small, travel-sized CPAP products are also available to support your lifestyle.

Manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure CPAP machines and masks are as comfortable as possible. However, it is critical to have them properly fitted and configured by a qualified healthcare professional.

VitalAire therapists have set up, assisted, and supported CPAP users for over 45 years throughout Canada. People who use CPAP therapy usually report that  it improves their quality of life dramatically.

What is the difference between CPAP, APAP and BiPAP?

CPAP provides a single continuous flow of pressurized air to keep your airway open while you sleep. For most people, CPAP is the preferred kind of sleep apnea treatment.

APAP and BiPAP provide more than one pressure settings throughout the night.

APAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure) fluctuates automatically within a range of pressures, based on algorithms that react to your breathing. When you are breathing properly the pressure is typically reduced, and when you experience obstructed breathing the pressure can increase to help you.

BiPAP, or Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure, has 2 set pressures - one for inhalation and one for exhalation. BiPAP machines are helpful if you struggle to breathe against the constant pressure of a standard CPAP machine, if you have more complex forms of sleep apnea, or if you have other conditions affecting your breathing during sleep.

Contact your VitalAire clinic – we offer the leading CPAP, APAP, and BiPAP machines, and we will help you test the different machines and masks to find the configuration that best meets your needs.

We will help you be more comfortable

Getting started with anything new can be difficult – even CPAP therapy, which can dramatically benefit your health. To ease your transition and ensure you are comfortable we have a program that lets you personalize your treatment with our clinicians, to ensure your machine comfort settings, mask style, and CPAP supplies are the best fit.

Are there CPAP alternatives?

CPAP therapy is considered to be the “gold standard” in treating obstructive sleep apnea.

However, there are other CPAP alternatives such as oral appliances, positional sleep devices, or more invasive surgical options. While these alternatives exist, CPAP is the non-invasive option which is considered 100% effective when used as prescribed. For this reason it is almost always recommended that those with sleep apnea try it first.
